Minorities panel seeks Centre’s intervention

The National Commission for Minorities has urged the Central Government to intervene and stop Sikh farmers from being evicted from Gujarat’s Bhuj area. “I have submitted a detailed report to the Centre and a copy of the same to the Gujarat Chief Minister,” said Dr Ajaib Singh, member of the commission.
He said a letter had also been sent to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Dr Ajaib Singh said the “land freeze,” had hit the Sikh farmers who were now unable to take loans to purchase farm equipment, fertilisers and pesticides.
Dr Ajaib Singh said he had met the district officials concerned during his visit to Gujarat. The officials had expressed their helplessness in the matter.
