After
a change of guard in the top order, the Congress today sought to put a
united figure of the party, with its leaders resolving to fight against
the SAD-BJP regime in Punjab together.
On
the occasion of the installation ceremony of new state president Partap
Singh Bajwa, Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar called for putting up a
“brave front” against SAD-BJP regime in the state, and asked party
members to be united to face the challenges posed by the Akali regime in
Punjab. Besides Kumar, the event was attended by a number of party
leaders including outgoing chief Amarinder Singh, Union Ministers Pavan
Kumar Bansal, Manish Tewari, Preneet Kaur, and senior leaders Rajinder
Kaur Bhattal and Ambika Soni.
Railway
Minister Bansal, in his speech, said people of Punjab have lost faith
in the SAD-BJP coalition and are now looking at the Congress as an
option. Congratulating Bajwa, I&B Minister Tewari said that if
Congress remains united and continues to raise voice of people, it can
defeat any party in any election. Tewari asked the party leaders to work
together for strengthening the party and keep internal differences
aside.
Minister
of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur asked party workers to back
the newly-appointed PPCC chief. Former Union minister Ambika Soni
alleged “complete lawlessness” in the state, and asked Bajwa to work for
replacing the SAD-BJP regime from power. Outgoing chief Amarinder also
congratulated Bajwa, and said the Congress needs to involve more and
more people to give a strong fight to SAD in Punjab.
BAJWA PAYS TRIBUTE TO BHAGAT SINGH
The
recently appointed Punjab Congress chief, Partap Singh Bajwa, on
Saturday paid tributes to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on the 82nd
anniversary of his martyrdom. "Shaheed Bhagat Singh was a brave
revolutionary of the Indian independence movement. He remains a torch
bearer of patriotism for youths not only in India but the whole
universe," he said in a function here.
Lok
Sabha MP Bajwa will take over as PPCC president in the presence of
senior party leaders including, Information and Broadcasting Minister
Manish Tewari, at party headquarters in Chandigarh later in the day. He
will replace former chief minister Amarinder Singh as the state unit
chief of the party
