NIA to probe Italian marines case, say sources

New Delhi: National Investigation Agency (NIA) will conduct investigation into the Italian marines case, sources said on Saturday. The government is likely to issue notification of the same next week, sources added.
The move is believed to ensure that the marines are tried according to Indian laws and that the international treaties do not subvert the process. At present, the Kerala Police is probing the case. The move is also likely to ensure that the Centre has a direct control over the probe. The marines, Massimiliano Latore and Salvatore Girone, were arrested in connection with the murder of two Kerala fishermen in February 2012. The two marines, who were on pirate-watch, have claimed they shot at the fishermen, confusing them with pirates. The two, who had left the country to vote in Italian general elections, were sent back on March 22, after Italy reversed its previous decision of not sending them back. The issue had sparked off a diplomatic row between India and Italy.
